Building Entrepreneurs Today

Building Entrepreneurs Today (BET) programme is one of Diamond Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives aimed at generating interest in entrepreneurship. Since 2010, we have partnered with the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) of the Pan Atlantic University in training and nurturing micro, small and medium scale businesses under the BET programme.

Currently in its fourth season, the BET programme is an annual capacity building and business education project which involves the training of fifty (50) budding entrepreneurs over a period of six (6) months after which the top five (5) entrepreneurs are awarded Three Million Naira (N 3,000,000) grants to take their businesses to the next level. This annual initiative has contributed immensely to the pool of skilled small and medium scale entrepreneurs as well as enduring wealth creation in the country.

While previous editions of the BET initiative were open to entrepreneurs involved in diverse economic sectors and businesses, the 2014 edition was open to only entrepreneurs involved in three (3) fundamental sectors – Agriculture, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Renewable Energy. These three sectors are key for any growing economy and it is believed that providing training and financial support for these sectors will impact the economy significantly.

This Corporate Social Responsibility initiative is making a huge impact on the lives of young people and is gradually changing society as small business owners are equipped with the right knowledge and skills to properly manage their businesses.

The 2015 edition of BET commenced in May 2015 and application to the BET programme is open to the general public.

In 2011, EDC was responsible for implementing the Grooming Enterprise Leaders Project, a Federal Government initiative to build the capacity of existing business owners across the six geo political zones. The program also had as its objective, improving access to SME related information as well as drive the development of enterprise support infrastructure in Nigeria. EDC was responsible for the training of the trainers’ curriculum development and co-training of selected SMEs.

In the last 3years, EDC has been the implementing partner for the Youth Enterprise with Innovation Nigeria (YouWIN!). As the pioneer implementing partner, EDC co-conceptualized and implemented the strategic framework for the pre, training and post training component. Over 200,000 business concept notes were marked by EDC in the last 3years under YOUWIN program as well as training delivery to almost 18,000 selected applicants across 20 locations in the 6 geo political zones of Nigeria. Beyond training delivery, EDC’s ability to think laterally and move swiftly enabled the record deployment of data capturing to all locations. These experiences and track record have made EDC develop structures and competencies to operate nationally.

Partnership with International Organizations

EDC has a long standing relationship with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), being the administrator of the Nigerian SME Toolkit portal in over a decade. EDC has been responsible for the development, localization and content provision on the portal. EDC is also a Business Edge Franchisee, a training methodology designed by the IFC for Small and Growing Businesses.

EDC has deep experience working with the World Bank and similar institutions. Apart from supporting initial research conducted by EDC in the MSME sector, EDC is currently working with the World Bank on the WomenX project- This pilot project is being implemented in Nigeria and Pakistan. The project aims to develop the capacity of 500 women over 3years in business and entrepreneurial management, using a blending learning approach. This project exposes the women to experiential learning using technology. The project commenced in September 2014 and is currently being implemented in Lagos (for the South) and Abuja (for the North)

Enterprise Development Centre was also the academic and implementation partner for Nigeria and Liberia under the Goldman Sachs 10,000women initiative. The GS 10,000 Women initiative was launched in 2008 by the Goldman Sachs Foundation, providing 10,000 women from across 43 countries with business and management education, mentoring and networking over a period of 5years. EDC built the capacity of 450 women across Nigeria as well as developed and co-taught for scholars in Liberia.

Beyond developing the capacity of women entrepreneurs and startups, EDC has considerable experience working in the creative sector having partnered with British Council to train young people in the creative industry in Nigeria.

The African American Institute and The Coca Cola Africa Foundation provided the platform in Sub Saharan Africa to develop the capacities of social entrepreneurs and non for profit organizations. This program- the Social Sector Program is a certificate program conceptualized and deployed by EDC and has graduated 160 social entrepreneurs/non-profits in 4 years. The blended learning version of the program will commence later this year.

EDC aims at being a leading enterprise centre not only in Nigeria but within the African continent. EDC’s flagship program “Certificate in Entrepreneurial Management” has been delivered to over 70% of the 2,200 strong alumni SMEs.

Our approach and model of building and supporting entrepreneurs in a systematic way makes outcome more predictable. Based on the success of this model, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private arm of the World Bank, supported the replication of EDC in Sub Saharan Africa. The replication project of the EDC model was implemented in Four African Countries (Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania). Apart from training, this model provides support structure for entrepreneurs on an on-going basis.
